Career Changers

If you’re looking for a career with impact you’ve come to the right place.

Ben Ross
Financial Advisor

Ben made the change from retail management into financial planning.

Ben shares why he made the change, how he grew his clientele, why Northwestern Mutual, and what he loves most about this career now that he is in it.

What was happening in your career that made you consider a change?

At my previous job I felt like I was capped from a personal development standpoint as well as a financial standpoint and I was only 24 years old. I also saw signs that the industry would change over the next 5-10 years and I felt that change would directly affect the people in my role and our ability to earn the income I was looking for.

Why did you choose a career in financial planning? And why did you choose Northwestern Mutual?

I wanted a career that provided 3 things. First, I knew I wanted to work with clients and meet new people every day, but I also wanted to build deeper and more meaningful relationships than I was able to do in a retail environment. Second, I wanted the ability to earn a great income by doing great work for other people. One of my favorite quotes is from Zig Ziglar who says, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” This business is the epitome of that. Lastly, I was looking for the freedom and independence to build my own schedule. Family comes first in my life and I never wanted to miss my kids’ important events because I had to be at the office.

I chose Northwestern Mutual from the moment I walked in for my first interview and to this day I felt that Northwestern Mutual had a set of core values that I believed in and that they actively worked every day to follow. Those core values are Growth, Integrity, Mutual Respect, Passion and Leadership which guide every decision we make. While every other firm I interviewed with focused on how much money I could make Northwestern was the only firm that really spent a lot of time helping me understand how important the work we do is for the community and how impactful we can be for a family in the best and the worst of times.

What experiences from the previous industry helped you find success with Northwestern Mutual?

From my previous industry I learned how to build relationships very quickly and how important service is in maintaining those relationships. I learned to be an active listener and how to quickly find out what problems or needs a client has and then how to work collaboratively with the client to find a solution that works for them. Lastly, I learned a lot about being a leader and a coach to clients as well as colleagues which I have been able to leverage in my role today as a Financial Advisor as well as the Growth and Development Director.
